Very much dependent on the ificspec engineering of the wind turbine. You are losing energy to friction, so the mechanics of the device are very important. All of that is not a consideration for fossil fuels becase the earth has done most of the conversion already by using gravity (i.e., pressure), which is basically infinitely available. If you are thinking not in terms of energy cost, but financail cost, then you really need to think about the supply chain. A single high-effeicncy wind turbine might cost $5MM to build, but there is operational cost, land cost, distribution and storage costs. All of that is baked into the end user price of a gallon of processed fossil fuels. I don't know the ificspec numbers, but I do know that none of the wind farms would be profitable without the government subsidies that they are getting ATM.That chart of 1996 California date someone posted showing that wind is the lowest cost seems highly suspect to me at a minimum it is looking at regulatory compliance costs for things like nuclear and fossil feuls, not just the cost of generating and delivering the energy. That is the problem with data "sound bites", they are a little to easy to quote without thinking about them.

Water, solar, and wind.Oddly enough the most onmmcoly found and under-utilized is probably methane. From human sewer systems to landfills, from animal production farms to compost production systems, there is a readily renewable source of methane. A number of folks consider methane to be less than environmentally friendly as its use does generate CO2. A number of folks consider it to be less than practical because one one source is likely to be a sole solution for an area/greater. A number of folks discount it because it is not necessarily a magic bullet that can be sold as the solution for use by all across the country, nor particularly by a private utility company. Still it exists and is not particularly being used for productive purposes.

Hi Tim, I suppose that the saying from tiny acorns mighty oaks do grow, may come to play here. It often takes the courage and foresight of just a few to influence and lead others, and hopefully ulitimately the whole community will benefit. The green shoots are definately here.

Thanks Rowena. I looked at the WREN website and found it very inspiring and not dissimilar to what is taking place here http://renewable.newstead.vic.au/ which is a pilot project of Central Victoria Solar City. I recommend you have a look and watch as we take this model to scale if it proves successful. The youtube videos are strikingly similar - however the Newstead video has a very Aussie flavor! Happy to share insights to date with anyone who is interested.

There are a number of stories of people living by Green principals. They are not isolated exceptions but they have all the social interactions that come with that as well. That is they are never utopian either but different. Here is another quite near my home
